Montessori Nursery - Settling in

Posted on September 18 2015

The Montessori children have settled very well into their classrooms and are getting to know their new friends. They have already started learning about the many Montessori activities and materials. The children have been keen to learn about the broad range of activities offered during our afternoon sessions which include Cookery, Swimming, Art Appreciation, PE, Spanish, Botany, Science and Art as well as regular visits to our local library. They will commence their Woodwork sessions in the second term when their fine motor skills have developed a little more.

Cookery
Already the Montessori children have had a lot of fun making olive bread and homemade oven chips during our Cookery classes on Monday afternoons.  Cookery is a much enjoyed activity by all the children (as well as the teachers)!  Our aim during our cookery sessions is to teach the children to appreciate food at this young age, expose them to some new tastes and textures and help them begin to develop a valuable skill that they can use throughout their adulthood.  Through our cookery sessions they are able to practice a range of skills including spooning, whisking, mixing tearing and sharing as well as how to clean up following the activity.  It also gives the children a chance to improve their mathematical skills by measuring and being precise with the ingredients they need to use.  Finally and most importantly, cooking is a great way for the children to bond with each other and with their teachers.
